MENTORING & COACHING

~ The Art and the Skills ~

Foreword:

Mentoring, or the process of mentorship, is really a growing, strengthening bond that occurs between a mentor, who is more experienced, not necessarily older, but who is certainly wiser; and his or her protégé, a mentee or someone who is less experienced and wise, and who therefore needs to be guided by the mentor. The concept of mentorship has long been known and tracked in history.

One of the most important skills a manager needs to have is to be able to mentor the team. Good mentors are natural leaders and mentoring is an art that they practice. They realise that in addition to getting the job done, they are also responsible to their team. The ultimate goal of mentoring is to help an employee attain psychological maturity and effectiveness. Mentoring thus is a collaborative, mutually beneficial partnership between a mentor who possesses a set of learned skills and knowledge.
